The Downey Kiwanis Foundation was chartered in January 1985. The incorporators were C. Richard Holmes, Richard M. Lehn and Charles Pifer. Since its inception the foundation’s main mission has been providing college scholarships for graduating high school students in Downey. Most recently, the foundation has extended its scholarship program to benefit students in Lakewood. During the 2023 Scholarship Banquet, the foundation awarded over $122,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors from Downey, Warren, Columbus and Lakewood High Schools.
In addition to college scholarships, the foundation has contributed financially to numerous community projects in Downey such as the ARC, the YMCA, Furman Park, the Columbia Memorial Space Center, among others. The foundation also contributes to the education of young children by its participation in the Downey Theater music education program, the First United Methodist Church child daycare program, and other non-profit organizations.
🌟 What an incredible afternoon at our Downey Kiwanis Club Member Guest Lunch! 🌟 We were thrilled to welcome a full house of members, guests, community leaders, and future Kiwanians who came together to learn more about how service can transform lives. A special thank you to our featured speaker, Dr. Roger Brossmer, Superintendent of Downey Unified School District, whose inspiring message touched everyone in the room. Drawing from both his professional journey and personal experiences, he shared the joy of watching students grow into leaders including some who have become proud members of the Downey Kiwanis Club. His stories were a powerful reminder that investing in young people creates a lasting ripple effect throughout our community. We were also honored to showcase the impact of the Downey Kiwanis Foundation, including support for children’s programs and community initiatives that are changing lives every day. Seeing the difference our members and donors make reinforces why we proudly say: 💙 Kids Need Kiwanis. Thank you to everyone who attended, our guests who explored membership opportunities, and our dedicated members who continue to make service a priority. Together, we’re building a stronger community—one child, one family, and one act of service at a time. 📸 Swipe to see highlights from the event! #Kiwanis#DowneyKiwanis#KidsNeedKiwanis#CommunityImpact#ServiceAboveSelf Volunteer Leadership DowneyCA CommunityService MakingADifference Education GivingBack NonprofitLeadership ServiceLeadership DowneyCommunity KiwanisInternational 💙💛 ...
