The Downey Kiwanis Foundation was chartered in January 1985. The incorporators were C. Richard Holmes, Richard M. Lehn and Charles Pifer. Since its inception the foundation’s main mission has been providing college scholarships for graduating high school students in Downey. Most recently, the foundation has extended its scholarship program to benefit students in Lakewood. During the 2023 Scholarship Banquet, the foundation awarded over $122,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors from Downey, Warren, Columbus and Lakewood High Schools.
In addition to college scholarships, the foundation has contributed financially to numerous community projects in Downey such as the ARC, the YMCA, Furman Park, the Columbia Memorial Space Center, among others. The foundation also contributes to the education of young children by its participation in the Downey Theater music education program, the First United Methodist Church child daycare program, and other non-profit organizations.
Huge shoutout to the amazing Key Clubbers from Lakewood High School and El Rancho High School for an incredible meeting takeover at the Downey Kiwanis Club! ππ
Both clubs brought energy, leadership, and plenty of delicious treats to share. During the meeting, each club held a baked goods auction filled with homemade goodies that had everyone bidding enthusiastically. Thanks to the generosity of our Kiwanis members, each club raised over $400 to support their trip to the upcoming Key Club District Convention!
We are so proud to support these outstanding young leaders and canβt wait to see all the great things they accomplish at DCON. πͺπ§
Last night was a special evening for the Downey Kiwanis Club as we had the privilege of welcoming three outstanding new members into our Kiwanis family. π
Please join me in congratulating Marisol Alarid, Argentina-Davila Luevano, and Angel Godinez Luevano, who were officially inducted during our meeting at the Arc Los Angeles/Orange County Reagan Center.
Membership is the lifeblood of Kiwanis, and each new member strengthens our mission to serve the children and families of our community. For more than a century, Kiwanis has brought together people committed to living the Golden Rule, building lasting friendships, and making a real difference through service. Welcoming Marisol, Argentina, and Angel continues that proud tradition.
The energy in the room was fantastic as we celebrated their commitment to service and the shared purpose that unites Kiwanians around the world: improving the lives of children and building stronger communities.
Weβre excited to see the ideas, passion, and leadership our newest members will bring to the club as we continue supporting youth programs, local initiatives, and service projects across Downey.
π Please join us in giving a warm Kiwanis welcome to our newest members!
