The Downey Kiwanis Club is dedicated to serving the local community through various service and fundraising projects. Our club has been in service to our community for 99 years. We are part of Kiwanis International, an organization serving children in local communities throughout the world for over 100 years.
Kiwanis members are a mosaic of ordinary people doing extraordinary things to uplift our community and serve children around the world.
Kiwanis helps kids around the world. Our Kiwanis club looks out for our community and the Kiwanis international organization takes on large-scale challenges, such as fighting disease and poverty. Our Kiwanis club is generous with its time. We are creative with our ideas. We are passionate about making a difference. And we have fun along the way!
For more than a century, Kiwanis has created opportunities for children to be curious, safe and healthy regardless of the community in which they live. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive, great things can happen.
Our Downey Kiwanis Club noon program featured a very special guest—Dr. Connie Quintero from Downey Unified School District and the TLC Family Resource Center. Even better, Connie is one of our very own Downey Kiwanians!
Connie gave us a wonderful overview of the incredible work TLC does every day to support Downey students and families facing difficult circumstances. From food and essential resources to connecting families with the help they need, TLC is an important safety net within our school community.
Most importantly, Connie shared where the greatest needs are right now and how our members can make an immediate difference. One priority is helping stock the TLC Resource Center Immediate Need Pantry with canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, beans, tomato sauce, and other essentials.
Our club was also proud to provide financial support to TLC—but we know the need doesn’t stop there. We’re asking our members to bring pantry donations to our next meeting! 🥫🍚🥜
Thank you, Connie, for reminding us that Kiwanis is at its best when we turn compassion into action. Together, we can make sure Downey students and families know their community is behind them. ❤️
🎡 The Journey of the Downey Kiwanis Spinning Wheel! 🔧💙💛
If this wheel could talk, it would have plenty of Kiwanis stories to tell!
The story goes back many years to when longtime member Gary Munger built the original Downey Kiwanis spinning wheel. The inspiration apparently came after our members saw another Kiwanis club using a wheel—either during an interclub visit or at a Kiwanis convention—and thought, we need one of those!
Our club had always used fines as a fun way to recognize members while raising a little extra money for the club, but adding a spinning wheel made the tradition even more exciting. Over the years, countless members have taken their chances with a spin, creating plenty of laughs, friendly competition, recognition, and great Kiwanis memories. 🎯😂
After many years—and probably thousands of spins—our treasured wheel was definitely showing its age. So it was time for a little renovation!
The wheel took a field trip to Rancho, where some of our talented young engineers put their creativity and engineering skills to work. 🔧⚙️ From the workshop, onto the Rancho Research Institute bus, and finally back home to the Downey Kiwanis Club, this piece of club history was repaired, refreshed, and restored to its prime form!
There was something pretty special about seeing Gary’s creation spinning again at our meeting. It’s a wonderful example of Kiwanis tradition meeting the next generation of innovation.
A huge THANK YOU to our Rancho team for helping preserve a little piece of Downey Kiwanis history.
